THE SENIOR MEN'S CLUB OF NEW CANAAN

Regular Meeting December 1, 2000

Vice President Bob Witt opened the business meeting with 152 members present. Current membership is 500, with 17 on the waiting list.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & ACTIVITIES

People, etc. Joe Sweet announced that Frank Barfuss was back, Don Ambuhl was shortly to be on his way home from Waveny, Tracy Mackle was recovering from open heart surgery, and Wally Rudd was in Norwalk Hospital with a severe hip infection.

Announcements: Bob Wasala made his semi-annual pitch for volunteers to help with the refreshments. His final words were no help, no coffee! Bob Bunge announced that he was departing for Maine, and thanked the SMC members for their great friendship over the years and also told us that Jim Wilson would be the new head of the "Clean a Mile" program. Pete Luke gave a brief announcement about a new book, "The President's Doctor" by New Canaan author Mick Heller. Charlie Morris once again reminded us of the Christmas luncheon on Dec. 8 at the Country Club of New Canaan.

Activities: Bowling, bridge, and paddle all continue, 4-F's is taking the month off, racquetball lacked players and is still trying to recruit from all the other activities, and "Trailblazers" is now blazing trails in Waveny before the meetings, observing lots of lovelies and dogs, presumably the four-legged kind.

Couth: 12/14 the Christmas show at Radio City, 1/25 Foxwoods, 2/14 the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and 3/16 the Bridgeport Downtown Cabaret Theater. Make note of the 1/25 date for Foxwoods which was changed from 1/18.

Jester: John Berg announced that this year's inaugural ball would be a "surprise party" and then told a story about how the Japanese were sending us Viagra to help us with our "erection".

SPEAKER Vice President Clancy Fauntleroy introduced fellow SMC member Sven Englund who took us on a wonderful trip to the city of Prague and parts of the Czech Republic. Sven had lots of slides showing many churches and many pulpits inside the churches. Ages varied from the St. George Cathedral of 950 AD to St. Nicholas Church, the largest baroque church in the Republic, from 1283 AD. He also brought out some interesting tidbits about how bones and skulls were often used as art objects in these religious institutions. Mr. Englund told us the city of Prague itself was very clean, and another nice feature was that you could go to a very good restaurant and get an excellent three course meal with wine for $25 per person. Phil Toll, please take note.
