THE SENIOR MEN'S CLUB OF NEW CANAAN
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of February 14, 2003
President Bob Witt opened the meeting with 162 members present. Membership is 521 with 4 invitees and 10 on the waiting list.
Announcements: Ken DeGroot introduced new members Paul Howes and Andrew
Molenaar. Dick DePatie announced that Ed Swanson passed away. Jack Roorbach and Elly King are still in Waveny. Pete Luke gave us an update on the "Y" elevator fund, which is now over $121,000 of the $150,000 goal. On Feb. 25-27 the "Y" will run a telephone campaign selling family bricks for $150-500. $500 will get your name by the front door, $150 will probably get you close to South Ave. Ed Deadrick announced that the Lapham Center is trying to put together a woodworking shop. Please sign up with Ed so that enough interest is shown for the go ahead for this project.
Activities: Bridge and paddle continue as usual. Bowling had at least 2 this morning. 4Fs next luncheon will be at Nino's on February 28.
Couth: 3/12 is Mama Mia, 4/24 is Hartford, and 5/8 the overnight trip to Boston. The rest of the year's schedule is forthcoming.
Resident humorist: John Berg told the southern members what their 5 favorite songs are. Then he told the membership how sex is really good for one's health according to a report from the Jan/Feb edition of "Modern Maturity." That even sounds better than two glasses of wine.
Speaker: Vice President Jack Murray introduced Michael Snelwar and Frank Hall who told us all about cars. They have just written a book, "Don't Get taken for a Ride," which is full of all kinds of goodies that help us maintain and repair our cars. This book gives a diagnostic guide to help find out what a problem could be. It also tells us that we should be very careful when purchasing an automobile to make sure that it hasn't been in an accident. Check all the panels for paint "shading," look at the hood and fender alignments, and look at the seams inside the hood and trunk to make sure that they all match. As far as maintenance is concerned, Mike couldn't stress enough that one should change the oil every 3,000 miles. Oil is the lifeblood of the automobile. Some other interesting tidbits were that Super Bowl Sunday is the most dangerous day of the year to drive, and the home city of the loser is the most dangerous place to drive. Also, cars with more cylinders generally last longer than those with fewer cylinders. Frank and Mike have a Saturday radio show, "Auto Care Hotline," which runs from 12:05PM to 1:00PM on stations WNLK and WSTC. The phone number is 845-3044. They will be glad to answer your questions and even rate a car you are thinking of buying. You can even reach them on the internet at www.autocarehotline.com. For those interested in purchasing their book, they even have a large print version. It must have been printed with all of us in mind.
