THE SENIOR MEN'S CLUB OF NEW CANAAN

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of May 30, 2008

President Jack Messert opened meeting with 114 of 476 members present and introduced new member Jack MacKay. He also presented excellent pictures of the Memorial Day Parade, with shots of many members (all marching in step, of course).

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Friday 6/13 8:30AM new member orientation at St. Mark's. Dick DePatie gave a "heads up" on the Madrigals (NCHS) fund raiser for a school in Africa. Jack announced a Board Meeting for next Friday, 6/6.

HUMORIST: Jim Schlumpf told story of elderly couple with good annual physical reports, except for the man's worry about going hot one time and cold the next time during "you know what". Moral to the story, check the seasonal forecasts (Is this the reverse of cold today and hot tamale?).

SPEAKER: Jinger Berry, Executive Director, The Health and Fitness Institute, The Tully Health Center (Stamford Hospital).
Jinger outlined "10 things you can do to look and feel younger in 60 days". She provided memory aids as follows: water, raw fruits/vegatables, processed foods (avoid), sugar (limit), fats (eliminate), alcohol/caffeine (limit), exercise (aerobic/anaerobic/ flexing), sleep (7-9 hours), goals/affirmations (set them), and fun (have it).
She had some additional particulars. Water (8-10 glasses/day, 2 glasses/bottle) critical so brain (75% water !!) does not stagnate. Diet soda, ice tea, and coffee do not count (darn!). Raw fruits/veggies key because enzymes aid digestion (meats have no enzymes). Processed foods (e.g. packaged, canned and frozen items) not equal to fresh. Baked, broiled food OK, fried NOT. Wheat bread in white out. Chips out. Fish good addition because of omega content.
With excessive sugar, energy will "go through the roof". Not a good high. Fat in typical food intake more than enough, additions not needed. Extensive Q and A on alcohol and caffeine. Apparent audience conclusion, giving up A and C would be like giving up breathing. On exercise, more emphasis on weight lifting and stretching. Especially critical for SMC members, sleep gives brain chance to organize and archive memories (wow!!). In conclusion, commit to targets, but have fun!
