Minutes of the Regular Meeting of June 6, 2008

President Jack Messert opened the meeting with 143 members present, and membership of 478. Minister of Health Bob Moylan reported Bill Kapp and Jim Bridgeman at Waveny. Werner Meyer would welcome calls at his home.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Vance Ward will have a new member orientation at 8:30AM on June 13. The Historical Society will have an ice cream social on June 8 with the Town Band playing. Dick DePatie said the Madrigal Singers are looking for contributions for a school in South Africa

ACTIVITIES: Bridge, racquetball, tennis as usual. Amateur Chefs meet on June 19 and on July 24 there will be a lobster bake. 4F's at Woodway Beach on June 27. Sky Blazers at Lapham on June 23- back to Berlin. Trail Blazers on June 19 in NYC at Bryant Park led by Pete Stair, and Putnam Park on July 2. Golf on June 9 at Ridgefield, and June 23 At Richardson in Fairfield.

COUTH: June 18 Long Island cruise cancelled The July event will be a tour of New Canaan historical spots including the Historical Society, Little Red Schoolhouse, with lunch at The Red Barn, $35pp, limit of 24 persons.

HUMORIST Scott Wallace told of the invaluable advice an Italian father gave his son as to the preferred use of each of his fingers, right up to his wedding night.

SPEAKER: First Selectman, Jeb Walker, gave an update on the town. Finances are in good shape. We will finish the year under budget on expenses. The General Fund balance is good, and we have easily kept our AAA rating.. The pension fund is overfunded, and the mill rate increase will be kept to 4%. In future years there is limited control of costs due to employee contracts, utility increases, insurance and economic pressures. The Playhouse has a new maintenance firm making necessary improvements, and a tenant will be occupying the retail space. Public Works; A $5million bond will fund continued road paving. Drainage problems(mostly Five Mile River) are in progress. Sidewalks are in the works on several streets. Lakeview Bridge should be finished this month. Irwin Park; some town hall facilities have been moved there, the trails are finished, the Summer Theater tent is up and discussions on the eventual use of the Barn are continuing. Waveny Park; Trail rehabilitation is partially funded by the State, the paddle hut is almost finished and "traffic calming" is in progress. The EMS house and Police Dept. Work are in progress.
