Minutes of the Regular Meeting of June 27, 2008

President Jack Messert opened the meeting with 86 members present, membership of 482,with two applications pending.
Minister of Health Bob Moylan reported Dave Means in Stamford Hospital, John Erdman, Ed O’Neil and Ed Gutt at Waveny.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Werner Meyer makes several trips to Yale New Haven each week. Anyone who can occasionally drive him contact Jack Murray. New Canaan Library is setting up a new web site and needs pictures. AARP is setting up a safe driving course, $10pp, date to be announced. No meeting next Friday.

ACTIVITIES: Bridge, racquetball, tennis as usual. Amateur Chefs meet on 7/24 there will be a lobster bake, $24 deposit. 4F’s at Woodway Beach today. Trail Blazers at Putnam Park on 7/2. Golf 7/14 at Sterling Farms, $37, and 7/30 at Whitney Farms, $45,and 8/27 @ Ridgefield.

COUTH: The July 22 event will be a tour of New Canaan historical spots with lunch at The Red Barn, $35pp, limit of 24 persons. Rhode Island trip cancelled. 9/18 trip to NYC to see art exhibit of New York Waterfalls.

HUMORIST Bob Moylan told of a Presidential election won by a Jewish candidate. The new president’s mother after much persuasion attended the inauguration and told a Senator sitting next to her who was more important, a President or a doctor daughter.

SPEAKER: Sharon Bradly and Elaine Abrams, executives of Nursing and Home Care, Inc. reviewed the functions of their organization, home care and hospice. Most of their time is spent with people recovering from illnesses, operations, etc. They are partners with "Staying Put", Waveny Care and are funded by United Way, Community Foundation and private donations. A feature is Telemedicine, where a TV camera and computer are in the home and nurses office so that medical help can be had at home. Elaine went into some detail on home safety as many injuries are in the home such as falls. Risk factors are balance, poor vision, taking several medicines and osteoporosis. Home dangers include poor lighting, slippery shoes and balance problems. Older people should use handrails on stairs, monitor medicine usage, make kitchen user friendly, grab bars in the bathroom, annual eye exams and regular exercise.
