Minutes of the Regular Meeting of June 11, 2010
Vice President Bob Goldblatt opened the meeting with 98 of 473 (8 new) members present.
NEW MEMBER(S): Jerry Transue introduced new members, Kevin McMahon, John Engel, and Jonathan Levine.
GUEST(S): None
MINUTES: Roger Langevin read the minutes of June 4, 2010.
MEMBERSHIP ASSISTANCE: Chairman, Bob Moylan was reported to be undergoing surgery.
ANNOUNCEMENTS were made: Vance Ward announced that the annual New Member Orientation will be held on Friday, June 25, from 8:30 to 9:30.
The status and plans were reported for various activities and couth trips:
ACTIVITIES: Bridge - As usual. 4-F Luncheon - Friday, 6/25, at Woodway Beach Club. Amateur Chefs - Thursday, 6/24; lobster fest, Thursday, 7/15. Bike Club - Had wonderful ride on Wednesday. Golf - 6/14 Ridgefield Golf Course; 6/30 Whitney Farms; 7/6 Sterling Farms. Tennis - (20-19-?) play at 8:00 AM; coffee at 9:15; permits $50. Racquetball - (4-4-4), a perfect week. Trailblazers - Wednesday, 6/16, three NYC sites: World Trade Center, Hudson River Park, and High Line Park.
COUTH: Thursday, 6/17, Belmont Park, 9:45 to 5:30, $70/pp with lunch in Garden Café plus tour of murals, check the Belmont website, dress code, 30 people scheduled. November: Broadway show, details to follow.
HUMORIST: Jack Messert told the story about a wife who finds her husband in their bed with a beautiful woman. Upon presenting "his side of the story," the husband explained how he merely was giving the woman things that his wife no longer uses.
SPEAKER: Vice President, Bob Rosenblatt introduced Matt Seiler, who has been the global chief executive officer of UM, a media agency in NYC. Seiler described the "Direction of Advertising and the Advertising Industry" and how technology is rapidly changing everything every day. He referred to a variety of social media networks, such as: Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Utube, Wikipedia, Google, TiVo, Kindle, eBooks, iTunes, iPhone applications, and blogs.
In the world of "socialnomics," he addressed the phenomenal number of advertising outlets and showed how the World Wide Web has expanded, during the dot.com era -- from 100,000 websites in 1996 to 160 million websites today.
Seiler described the scope of on-line advertising, various search engines, and the new website, Bing. He compared social network MySpace to Facebook.
The Q&A session addressed: internet advertising commissions, Ebay vs. Amazon, internet traceability/trails/addressability, banner ads, print (magazine/newspaper) advertising, multi-tasking in the car, and the impact of social networking on industrial productivity.
When projecting what the future has in store, he described crowd sourcing, hyper targeting, and first-run movie VOD. In closing he said there's a lot going on ... hold on to your hats.
